That’s the whole idea of what house music is; it’s love and understanding. We spoke to some of its stars, including Jesse Saunders, the creator of the first commercially released house record; the Ten City pioneers Byron Stingily and Marshall Jefferson; and some of the genre’s biggest vocalists, Robin S and Ultra Nate. Here they recall how they made those early records, reflect on their own legacy and this latest resurgence, and (largely) welcome these prominent new figures into the house they built. And once Chicago and the UK had their explosive chemical reaction in 1988, the sound truly became immortal. At this point, “acid house” also came to mean the broader British cultural explosion that became rave, but the longevity of the original warping, squelching, twisting sounds of Chicago-derived acid house has had a life completely its own.

While other sub-genres have evolved over time, acid house arrived fully formed. The foundational tune, “Acid Tracks” by DJ Pierre, Herb J and the late Earl “Spanky” Smith, came like a bolt from out of the blue, and still sounds untouchably advanced to this day. It turned the Roland TB-303 bassline generator — an almost obsolete synth that was originally intended as a simple automated accompanist for solo musicians — into the most iconic instrument in all of dance music.

Having produced as Cajmere since the early 90’s, Cajmere has created timeless classics as “Percolator” and is still a sought after presence in the dance music scene. Somewhat of a combination of electro, progressive, tech, and deep house, future house popped up only within the last decade. It’s a form of house that is also very popular amongst EDMer’s as well as being played at large festivals. Future house on average tends to be fairly fast bpms and is known to have driving bass as well a heavy metallic like synth stabs. Somewhat similar to electro house, what is considered progressive house today was completely different than when it was first established in the 90’s.

The British duo that is CamelPhat have been rising sharply, large in part due to their smash releases on Defected Records, an independent label formed back in 1999. You’ve most likely heard their GRAMMY nominated track “Cola” (with Elderbrook) which has amassed over one hundred million plays on Spotify alone. Justin Martin is not only one of the founding members of Dirtybird, but he also is considered one of the best producers and DJs of the crew. His sound often tries to incorporate large, heavy bass lines with beautiful melodies; a combination that isn’t easy to pull off.
Nearly everything Lane 8 produces is gold, but this song below, “Daya,” has one of the most emotive melodies we’ve heard from him. The list contains a variety of subgenres that stretch from deep house, to tech house, and everything in between, and ordered from the easiest to hop into, to the deeper cuts – in descending order. Adam Richard Wiles, also known as Calvin Harris, is a Scottish DJ, music producer and songwriter. Back in June of 2007, Calvin Harris released his debut studio album I Created Disco which was released via EMI and Sony BMG.

Drake has long been praised for his ability to diss rivals on hit songs that they have to hear in the club, so you know he’s seething now that someone did it to him. Kendrick managed to trigger an entire rap war off his first hand, so there’s no telling what else has up his sleeve. He transforms the original Metro-produced beat by adding a choir of Inter Milan hooligans, in the same way that he did on his No. 1 song “Carnival,” which makes it feel like it could have soundtracked a blockbuster movie trailer. But sadly, it’s less like Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and more like Marvel’s Ant-Man 3. And the lyrics are worse, as Ye spends the first half of the verse rapping about himself before firing off a few half-baked shots about Lucian Grainge, J. Cole, how he “can’t even think of a Drake line” (which is a lie).
At the time, I loved the music, but I thought club music was faceless. The Playground [the early Chicago house club Saunders ran] was one of the first places in the city where you’d get straight kids, the gay crowd, all these people came together in one place, and it was really interesting. From 1994 until the turn of the millennium, Gemini, aka Spencer Kincy, was one of the most revered figures in the second wave of Chicago house. A decade ago, when a reporter tracked him down, he was homeless and apparently struggling with mental illness, even as a fresh crop of reissues, edits, and bootlegs was boosting his popularity among a new generation of clubbers and DJs. The music doesn’t begin so much as surface, as if “Around the World” arises from some great depth, that lowpass filter cutting out the high-end without obscuring the “fundamental” signal.
As big room culture’s global expansion continues, there’s no knowing what will come next. Jackin’ was an intrinsic property of house music from its gestation in Chicago, referring to a specific dance move involving the whole torso. But over time, jackin’ coalesced around the most brutally repetitive, percussive, looping tracks, which inspired the wildest dance moves. These “jack tracks” or “trax” quite frequently came with a ribald sexual sense of humour, as in Farly “Jackmaster” Funk’s “Jack the Dick” or Maurice Joshua’s “I Gotta Big Dick” or Steve Poindexter and Armando’s “Work That Motherfucker”.
Among all of the dance music artists, house musicians and producers are some of the most popular DJs in the world. In fact, house DJs are famous for their dynamic live shows, unparalleled energy, and strong regional fanbases. Building on the foundations of disco, a four-on-the-floor kick drum is essential to the sound of house music, as well as, typically, off-beat hi-hits. From that simple foundation, house music takes all manner of twists and turns.
Historically deeply influenced by musical trends coming from England, France, and the US, Montreal has developed a distinct house music scene. The single "Love Can't Turn Around," credited to Farley "Jackmaster" Funk and featuring vocals by Chicago gospel singer Darryl Pandy, was released in 1986. Deep house is probably one of the slower forms of house music having more of a focus on slow grooves. Deep house tends to have more of a less aggressive jazzy and soulful feel along with using more of a grooving deep bass, hence the name. Drake is such an indomitable force in rap that it takes a whole army of foes to join forces and make a coordinated effort just to attack him, and even then, he still finds a way to fire back against them all. “Push Ups” is a masterclass in multitasking, a song where he efficiently takes shots at Kendrick Lamar, Future, Metro Boomin, Rick Ross, The Weeknd, and even Ja Morant (?) with four minutes of straight bars on a beat that sounds like it could have soundtracked the OG Halloween franchise.
British deep house producer Jimpster discovered his affection for house music at the age of 10. Coming from a musical family, Jimpster (aka Jamie Odell) was exposed to synths and recording equipment which formed the foundations for his DJ style. Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson’s tastes began forming after frequenting their local, and now legendary, club Shine which played heart hammering, deeply intense music, solidifying their desires to become part of that scene. They created the blog “Feel My Bicep” to share and discover old electronic tunes which influenced their own sound and soon became where the pair would get discovered. Sonny Fodera is another well respected, overseas all-star from Defected Records. The prolific producer has many releases under his belt, but is perhaps most popular for his remixes.
2022 will undoubtedly bring us more Sam WOLFE excellence so keep your eyes and ears planted firmly on this hungry techno aficionado. In Atlanta, Sam WOLFE has taken over the game when it comes to techno. When he stepped out in 2020 with “Triangulum,” we were swept away by his blend of dark euphoric sound structures set upon a profound bassline hammer. Since then, he has refused to slow down for even a second, flinging out hellishly cerebral offerings like Graveyard March and The Gorge. They released several singles under more than 5 different names and found a sprinkling of success before settling as CamelPhat.
He’s fresh off of his performance at Insomniac’s Countdown Invasion and EDC Las Vegas this past year, in addition to stealing the show at Dirtybird Campout and Day Trip, solidifying a bright future. The Martinez Brothers are a Bronx-born, Puerto-Rican DJ duo, composed of brothers Steve and Chris Martinez. They started DJing in their early teens and have since become known for their house, techno, and disco-inspired music.
Funnily enough though, it wasn’t until after Knuckles had left The Warehouse to found The Power Plant in 1982 that he started to use drum machines live in his set, and others in Chicago began making what we’d recognise as house records. That is to say, “house” existed as a culture in Chicago for a good while before it was a sound as such. After evolving on the Chicago club scene in the early ‘80s, house music exploded at the end of the decade to become the world’s most exciting and innovative dance genre. By the early ’90s, massive pop stars like Madonna, Janet Jackson and Kylie Minogue were all incorporating elements of house music into their sound – a sure sign that it had infiltrated the mainstream. Trax Records and DJ International Records, Chicago labels with wider distribution, helped popularize house music inside and outside of Chicago.
