With the new (2-berth) dock the cruise port now has berthing capacity of 3 of the world's largest passenger ships (of RCI's Oasis-class) simultaneously. St. Kitts was named in 1493 by the explorer Christopher Columbus after St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, and later shortened to the more familiar St. Kitts. Kitts was shared between Britain and France for nearly a century—and pirates prowled the seas. The new docking pier is located west of the old pier and south of the Port Zante Marina. The new pier allows simultaneous berthing of two Oasis-class vessels, which are currently the world's biggest (LOA length 360 m, GT tonnage 227,000 tons, max capacity 6780 passengers plus 2390 crew). The main shopping area of Basseterre is located just steps from the pier, in Port Zante. Head further into Basseterre, though, for more authentic purchases, from paintings by Caribbean artists to antique maps and handmade flip flops and purses.

Second (new) cruise ship pier

Allow at least one hour to walk through the rooms and explore the fortress. As of 2020 the pier is capable of handling four large cruise ships at once. If more than four ships are calling, the other ships will either use the cargo port or tender passengers ashore. Located just outside St. Kitts' capital of Basseterre, Port Zante opened in 2005 to accommodate the big cruise ships. Does all this activity sounds too much and you just want to lime like a local? We recommend a taxi ride to the beaches on the South East peninsula.
